Large-Flowered Trillium (Trillium grandiflorum)
Large-flowered trillium is a low-growing spring perennial. This plant enjoys wooded areas and can be found in trillium clusters. The Blue Ridge mountains are known to have a tremendous amount of large-flowered trillium blooming in the spring.
Identifying Large-Flowered Trillium
Large-Flowered Trillium has a few key identifying traits such as:
- White flowers
- Little green stems
- Three leaves beneath the larger white flower
- Six stamens inside the flower
Fun Fact - Spreading Seeds
Trillium seeds spread through myrmecochory. In layman’s terms, this means ants carry the seeds and disperse them. Who knew the movie “Bug’s Life” was really about business when writing the script.
